Mark Gardiner - Director of Tennis

Mark has been with Oakland Tennis Center since opening day. He is entering his 10th year as the Head Coach of the Newberry College Men's and Women's Wolves Tennis Teams. 

The Chapin native has been a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association since 1990 and is currently rated a 4.5 by USTA Team Tennis. He has been a member and a captain of USTA men's, combo and mixed doubles teams and most of these teams have advanced to the state tournament and won state titles since 2003.

Mark was elected the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) Member of the Year in 2019.

Ross Sons - Assistant Director of Tennis and Coordinator of Intermediate and Advanced Juniors

Ross recently joined the Oakland Tennis Center staff and he is also the Assistant Coach of the Newberry College Men's and Women's Wolves Tennis Teams. 

Sons, a 2014 Newberry graduate, has spent the last two seasons assisting the Limestone men's and women's tennis programs. He has helped the Saints' programs combine for three regular season Conference Carolinas championships, a conference tournament title, one NCAA Championship bid, and a No. 27 final national ranking for the Limestone men's program in 2018. Eleven Limestone players attained all-conference honors during his time on staff.

Sons also has experience as an assistant coach at River Bluff High School in Lexington and has instructed at three private clubs in the greater Columbia area, including serving two years as the head tennis professional at Rockbridge Club.

As a player, Sons racked up 29 singles wins and 37 doubles victories during his four seasons on the team. He played most frequently at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles, although he competed in every position except the top singles flight during his career. He amassed 33 wins in South Atlantic Conference play between singles and doubles action.
